CHAPTER SIXTEEN

ELENA

They’d hit us with a rocket launcher. My ears rang, and I stumbled over rubble on the ground. Tears welled as my eyes stung with the smoke. Marco’s voice sounded hollow, and it took me a moment to register that he was calling me. “I’m here.” I coughed, cleared my throat, then yelled louder.

Not even a second later, Marco was by my side, running his hands along my body and checking me for injuries.

“I’m fine. Just got knocked down.”

The sound of automatic gunfire got us moving. Back on my feet, I clutched a gun in both hands. The rest of our group fanned out after making sure we were all okay. I could hear the captains speaking with the bosses in the communication device Marco had fitted into my ear earlier.

I coughed again as we crept forward, making our way to the garage to exit out the side. As our group sounded off, we learned what areas were under heavy fire and went to assist. Marco was through the door first, shielding me from any attack. Men shouted as a barrage of gunfire rang too close to comfort.

There were guards everywhere, three times the usual number, working in an almost military cadence against the enemy. I caught a glimpse of Max and Stefano. Emiliana was in the fight, toe-to-toe against an adversary, gun firing, and knife slashing. Lil held two guns, as did Sofia. Marco’s brothers, Trey, the doctor, and Nico, the accountant, were deep in the fray. Even Tony fought with us. I couldn’t believe how much he’d changed.

I pushed that aside and took position with Marco as more Russians descended. We kept an eye out in case they were going to launch any more missiles. We fought. Time blurred as bodies fell. I felt the sting of a knife more than once as it made contact before I could dodge the impact. I blocked the pain as best as I could, numb to all but the next target, the next enemy that came at me or that I had to stop from double-teaming one of my friends.

Marco was a machine. I had to block him out as much as I could, or the way he moved and how he struck down our opponents would mesmerize me. I lost time as I fought. The night was a sea of bodies, a flash of weapons, grunts, and screams.

Then they pulled back. I couldn’t believe it and glanced at Marco, who wore the same shocked expression but mixed with more anger. Our numbers were greater than theirs. Most of the corpses scattered across the lawn were theirs. Stefano barked out a few orders to the men, resulting in another flurry of motion as they hoisted bodies over their shoulders.

There was a large storage shed in the backyard, and as our soldiers carried the dead Bratva in that direction, I could only guess there were vats of acid or an industrial-sized freezer to stash them in until we dropped them on the Bratva’s doorstep.
